Cold and Flu Symptoms.

Common Cold or Flu?

All of us have experienced common cold or flu symptoms, but we rather forget them for we felt miserable - really miserable while suffering from a flu.

We call a cold common, because it can happen any time of the year, although most often during the winter months or a rainy season, when it can develop into an even nastier sickness we call flu.

The weather can make us more susceptible to it, but not cause it. You can not catch a cold or flu from cold temperatures.

But airborne viruses are contagious, particularly an aggressive one which might have struck you from someone one who is already sick. It then multiplies furiously within the body.

The common cold-flu symptoms manifest usually within 2 or 3 days of contamination, but even before you experience any symptoms you can transmit viruses.

There are over 100 different viruses which can cause a cold, some of which can multiply and cause flu symptoms.

Good Advice.

Didn't your mother or grandmother advice you to wear a hat and a scarf in a cold, rainy and windy weather? Well, according to Ancient Chinese Medicine, if your immune system is impaired and you expose your head or neck to rain and cold wind, the muscles tighten preventing the harmonious Chi flow through 'the wind and window of the sky points'.

The viruses can then gain upper hand and cause the symptoms.

Also, keep your feet warm and dry! A recent study confirms that exposing feet to a bucket of cold water leads to a runny nose and other common cold symptoms.

What Are the Symptoms of a Common Cold?

First you feel 'run down - under the weather' - with some chills. Then come runny nose, sneezing, scratchy throat and cough with chest discomfort, perhaps mild headache, but rarely a fever.

With a cold you might feel a little tired, but not extremely so - as you do when suffering from flu symptoms.

The symptoms come when you're most unaware, often when under some kind of stress or worry.

One of hundreds of different viruses we carry or are exposed to, is the culprit. If we do not take right measures to stop the most virulent one from multiplying, it can cause a flu.

Here is a list of Flu Symptoms, they are swift and severe:

  • Tiredness(can be extreme)

  • Fever/chills/sweating

  • Headache

  • Dry cough

  • Sore throat

  • Stuffy nose

  • Sneezing

  • Body aches

  • Loss of appetite

  • Usually no stomach symptoms such as vomiting or diarrhea (except in very young children).

With a flu you simply want to stay in bed the first 3 to 5 days. Full recovery usually takes 1 to 2 weeks.

The flu can also be deadly for older and the weak, especially if they are suffering from chronic conditions.

    Flu Prevention.

You do not have to be part of the 'flu-herd' of millions of people who fall victim to the contagious influenza viruses each year.

The numbers of flu sufferers are mind boggling. The estimated 500 millions cases a year cost US economy $40 billion. It causes more than 36 000 deaths and sends 200 000 people to the hospital each year in US alone.

And think of the misery flu symptoms bring to those who have it, they live through agonizing headache, muscle aches, fever, sweating, sore throat etc.

Or better yet, become actively aware that Flu Prevention is the best method of all!
